Welcome to the picturesque grocery store of Maria and Frédéric Marti, both are friendly concierges and owners of the Citron Vert (lime in French) grocery store, since 1997.
For six years that I take the same street to go back home, I regularly visit this store with always have the same impression. A feeling of escape. Once the green door is opened, the chime sings – Hello Mr. Julien! – Maria’s South American accent is certainly for something, or is it folkloric? The walls are green, lime green for consistency, decorated with sombreros and large painted fans. Asians fans, no doubt. And then there’s that bead curtain too, which separates the kitchen from the store. It reminds me of my grandmother’s. On the fridge, a collection of quirky bottles, colourful terracotta statuettes, and finally, posted in the middle of a pile of watermelons, a stereo, always on. Rihanna today, Michèle Torr the next day. A kitschy decor, you took the words right out of my mouth, but all in all much more charming than the underground car park atmosphere of the nearby grocery stores, which for the most part offer more fossilised pizzas than frozen.
We can find in Citron Vert absolutely everything you would expect from a neighbourhood grocery store, tinned foods, frozen pizzas (anyway!), snacks of all kinds, but also fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, a range of lactose-free products, as well as a wide selection of fine wines (mainly from Latin America and Spain). In addition, Maria prepares, throughout the week, various specialties. Of Peruvian origin, this fine cook offers, between a few words and a smile, meat or vegetarian empanadas, grilled chicken (on order), banana or carrot cake, salpores de arroz, and more. For over 20 years, this couple have a loyal charmed clientele that flock from both sides of Geneva. Once again, a place that we would like to keep secret, but because we, people of My Big Geneva, are still nice, we are happy to share it with you!
