2020, a record year for Ricardo

Last year, over 6.5 million items were sold on Ricardo.ch, a transaction every five seconds and an increase of 29% from the previous year.

The second-hand boom
The proportion of second-hand items has doubled in just two years. With 50.4%, the second hand overtook the new market for the first time. The number of registered members increased by 360,000, which represents an increase of 30% compared to the previous year and thus makes it possible to exceed the mark of 4 million members. In theory, each Swiss household, therefore, has a Ricardo account. Among the 114 million search terms, “Louis Vuitton”, “Moto” and “Caravane” are on the podium. As for the most expensive items, it is a Patek Philippe watch and a Lamborghini Gallardo, each sold for 110,000 francs on the online platform.

Zug, January 25, 2021
In 2020, Switzerland spent a lot more time at home and on the web, thanks to Covid. This trend is very clearly reflected in Ricardo’s annual report. The Swiss online marketplace is posting record results in all areas. A total of 1.4 million active members generated 6.5 million transactions, an increase of 29% over the previous year. In 2020, 26.5 million bids were made through auctions (+ 13%). A titanic battle ensued to acquire a lithograph by Alois Caragiert: with 1,217 bids, it was the auction that aroused the greatest enthusiasm. In the past year, however, buyers have had less time and less opportunity to wait for the auction to end. They favored goods available immediately: 1.64 million items were purchased at the direct purchase price, which corresponds to an increase of around 40% compared to 2019. The “Fashion”, “Household & Home” and “Collections & Rarities” categories were the most popular. A total of 114 million searches were performed, almost four per second. Among the most searched terms: Louis Vuitton, motorcycle, caravan, Rolex and Lego. During and after the spring lockdown, it was the “mask” that took first place.
