As night falls, the street lights of the Vieux-Carouge facades are transformed into colourful garlands of pink, orange or red. The street lights invite you for a Big walk into a mysterious universe. Along the promenade, artistic illuminations and giant decorations immerse the visitor in a delicate and poetic world. At the Place de l’Octroi, birds are flying towards the wooden tree of the Swiss Pine restaurant, where you can enjoy warm winter food. Place du Marché, the trees are decorated with rounded flowers in soft lights. On top of the Big fountain, giant birds seem ready to shake their scintillating plumage in the cold water, while giant carps swim in the sky of the street Vautier. The goblins play hide and seek in the alleys of the city. These fairy decorations are complemented by many festive events that will certainly make this “Carougeois” Christmas an event as enchanting as unforgettable.

Christmas market of craftsmen

The Carouge Christmas Market will take place on Friday the 13th, Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of December. From Friday at 11am to Sunday at 6pm, St-Joseph Street, Place du Temple and Place du Marché will host more than 70 craft stalls including various local and home-made products, jewels, designer clothes, ceramics, small furniture, candles, works of art, toys and soaps. Many “green” workshops that raise awareness of climate change and promote a sustainable future are organised during the Christmas market such as the Carouge Zero Waste workshops. The streets of Carouge will also play the piano, drums and street fanfares along with animations such as the living nativity screen or a funny Santa mounted on stilts.

Ice rink and other fun things to do

This year’s impressive program rhymes with quantity and quality. For the Advent calendar, Magic Carouge suggests to open each day from December 1st the door of the workshop of a craftsman (check the complete schedule).
You can already put on your skates at the ice rink of the Sardinia square to slide to the rhythm of the music, under the illuminated tree. Themed parties – disco, Michael Jackson – are scheduled throughout the Winter season (free entrance).
Seasonal sweets and shows can be enjoyed at the bar-trailer on the Temple square while a Yurt will host many activities and workshops for kids & co.
Christmas being the season of dreams and wishes, you can write down yours on the trees of the Charmettes square and hope that it will fall in a propitious ear…

And finally, in order to make Christmas shopping away from the stress of department stores, note that the shops in Carouge will be open every Sunday in December.
