The House of Tartar

La Maison du Tartare (i.e. the house of the tartar) is a unique table d’hôte restaurant in Geneva, so unusual that it will literally take your breath away. The restaurant is located on the top floor of a residential building in Le Lignon area.
The owner, Mrs. Monique Ambrosio lives on the 30th floor of one of the two Big Le Lignon towers. She mastered the art of tartar since the time she owned a restaurant in Vernier, before “relocating” it to her flat and turning it into a table d’hôte in 2010.

So when my faithful friend offered me the chance to taste a tartare 100 meters above the ground, head in the clouds (because I felt at the time down in the dumps), I said yes, without hesitation.

The menu changes according to the season: the starters vary between a tartare of sea bream, asparagus or chanterelles, etc … (from 17.- to 24.-). The main dish pays tribute to the beef tartar: thyme and fresh herbs, with foie gras or chips of truffles, etc … (from 38.- to 47.-). I took a pineapple tartare to finish my diner but you also have a large selection of desserts , including a chocolate moelleux if you crave for chocolate. Mrs. Ambrosio is kind enough to also consider any request you may have that will satisfy your appetite.

Of course, the waiting list is gigantic, as gigantic as the city of Lignon because La Maison du Tartare hosts between 4 to 10 people only, for lunch or diner. The panorama is breathtaking, Mrs. Monique Ambrosio is a perfect hostess and a perfect chef … All I can suggest to you is to book a table, wait until the next available reservation; invite your dearest friends or your family to join you and taste a large variety of tartars while almost touching the sky because such a tasty experience can only be enjoyed with people you care about. And Mrs. Monique Ambrosio does care a lot about her guests.

PS: in 1971 Francis d’Ivernois acquired an agricultural domain and named it Lignon in reference to a small river of Forez in France mentioned in the novel L’Astrée of Honoré d’Urfé. In 1962, the State of Geneva decided to build one of the most important cities of the canton … Georges Addor (to whom we owe the Budé park, the city-satellite of Meyrin and the building housing the headquarters of Rolex) surrounded by his architects built an urban infrastructure, optimizing the sun exposure, in the shape of a “Y”, 1,065 meters long, composed of 2,780 apartments. Two towers are the emblem of this infrastructure: one has 26 floors, the other has 30 floors culminating at 91 meters high (the highest building of the Canton of Geneva and the 5th in Switzerland). Impressive no?
